  • An Evening With Noel Coward
    On Thursday, Feb. 3, Professor Emeritus Milton Levine presented An Evening With Noel Coward.
  • Holly Black Reading
    On Friday, Feb. 4, children’s author and TCNJ alumna Holly Black gave two readings.
  • Book drive! Beginning 2/8, people may donate books in the Bliss Lounge or money in the English department office. Books will go to schools, orphanages and prisons..
  • Pride and Prejudice
    Marathon showing of A & E’s Pride and Prejudice on Sunday, Feb 13 from noon until 6:00 p.m. in the Bliss Lounge.  Come for some or all of it.  Bring food or drink to share or a dollar to help defray sandwich costs.
  • “How to Teach…” Series
    Tues. Feb. 22, 4-5:15, Bliss 146
    Jennifer Knoblock, last year’s winner of the Robert Mehlman teaching award and Alfred. P Holman departmental award will be presenting on her teaching of Ethan Frome.
  • Independent Studies Forum
    Students speak and answer questions on independent studies and Honors Theses in English.  Tues, March 29 at 3:30 in the Bliss lounge and repeated at 7:00 p.m. in School of Business 231
  • Inductions of new members took place on Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Business Building Lounge.
  • STD sponsored the on-campus premiere of The End, a film produced by Laura Forti (’05) on Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. in SC101.  Click here for the film poster.
  • ENGT “Dine with Experience”:  All ENGT majors were invited to an informal sandwich supper on Friday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Eichoff 158, the president’s dining room.  We invited alumnae/i of our program to talk about their experiences in the classroom.

  • English Department Orientation Event
    On Friday, September 10th, STD sponsored an English department orientation event.  Dr. Jo Carney spoke, as did many other English faculty. Representatives from English-related organizations, such as The Siren, The Lion’s Eye and INK, were on hand to answer questions.
  • Graduate School in English Information Session by Dr. Felicia Steele
    Wednesday October 6, 2004 at 8:30pm in Bliss 148, Dr. Felicia Steele gave an information session about graduate schools in English and related fields.  She helped interested students plan a timetable to facilitate their application process, discuss the formation of writing groups, and give other tips on the process.
  • English Teaching Social
    On Wednesday, Nov. 4th at 3:30 p.m., STD hosted an event for ENGT majors to ask questions and get advice from those who are currently teaching.
  • Freedom Road
    On Friday, Nov. 3 at 8:00 p.m., STD cosponsored a screening of Freedom Road, a documentary film directed by Dr. Lorna Johnson and featuring Dr. Michele Tarter. A panel discussion followed. Click here to read a summary.
  • English Teaching Panel Discussion
    On Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m., STD hosted a panel discussion for ENGT majors. School officials and administrators discussed and answered questions on the hiring process.
  • Game Night
    On Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 8:30 p.m. in Bliss Lounge, STD hosted a game night that was open to the campus community.

  • Faculty Research Talk: “Tolkien and Old English: The Language behind The Lord of the Rings ” by Dr. Felicia Steele
    On Thursday, Feb 5 at 8:00 pm in SC 101, Dr. Steele gave her informative and interesting lecture on The Lord of the Rings. Then, on Monday, February 2 and  Monday, February 9 at 5:30 pm in Bliss 147, Sigma Tau Delta showed the The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers movies.

Events

  • Reading of Song of Myself and Whitman Parodies
    Hosted by Dr. Michael Roberston
    On Wednesday, December 3 at 2:00-5:00 pm in the Social Science Building atrium, Sigma Tau Delta sponsored a reading of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” Then students had the opportunity to share their own Whitman parodies.
  • Chevy’s Fundraiser
    On Thursday, Nov. 20th 2003, people came out to Chevy’s to enjoy some great Mexican food. In addition, 20% of their bills went to support Sigma Tau Delta.
  • “Web Workshop for Wordsmiths” by Craig Kapp
    On Wednesday, October 29 from 12:30 -2:00pm, Craig Kapp (the college technology guru) talked about web design and led a hands-on introduction to creating a web page. The workshop was open to English faculty and students and was geared to the web skills of literary types.
  • English Teaching Information Sessionby Dr. Emily Meixner
    On Friday October 24 from 3:30pm-5:00pm the new English Education Professor, Dr. Emily Meixner discussed the transformed courses in terms of the  English Education major,  answered questions students had about New jersey certification, and provided information about the ‘No Child Left Behind Act.’ This session also was a chance for English Education majors to meet and get to know Dr. Meixner.
  • All-Day Reading of the Odyssey hosted by Dr. Carney
    On Wednesday, October 22 from 5am-8am in Bliss Lounge and 8am-5pm, between Holman Hall and Roscoe L. West Library, Dr. Carney hosted an all-day Odyssey reading extravaganza in celebration of the Odyssey Art Exhibit opening in The Holman Art Gallery. Students signed up to read their favorite book from the Odyssey or listened throughout the day. Free and open to the TCNJ community.

  • Shakespeare Film Series
    On Thursdays at 7:00pm in Bliss 152, Sigma Tau Delta met to watch films based on a variety of Shakespeare plays. We watched Midsummer Night’s Dream (9/18), Romeo and Juliet (9/25), Richard III (9/30), Scotland, Pa (10/9), Henry V (10/16), Titus (10/23), Dead Again, a Special Halloween showing, (10/30), Twelfth Night (11/06), Hamlet (11/20), and Complete Works by the Reduced Shakespeare Company (12/4).

Spring 2003

Events

  • Tea with Jane Austen
    Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. in Bliss 114
    In the Spring 2003 semester we sponsored a “Tea with Jane Austen” series, where we enjoyed tea, cookies, and a portion of a movie based on one of Jane Austen’s novels.  Following the movie, we discussed its relation to Austen’s novel and caught up with each other. All members of the TCNJ community were welcome. Tea and treats were served free of charge.
  • Panel Discussion on Publishing
    On Wednesday, February 5 at 12:30 pm in Bliss 234, the Creative Writing Committee sponsored a panel discussion on publishing with Peter Steinberg, literary agent, and Mark Drew and Mindy Wilson, both of whom are literary editors.  There was no charge for this event and was open to the entire TCNJ campus community.  Click here to read a summary.
  • “How to do Research” by Dr. Felicia Steele
    On February 20 at 5:00pm in Bliss Hall 146, Dr. Felicia Steele presented a symposium on research methods and issues in English departments.  This event was open to the entire TCNJ community free of charge.
  • The Lord of the Rings and the Middle Ages” by Ed James
    On March 4 at 7:30 pm in the Science Complex , room 101, Sigma Tau Delta and the History Club co-sponsored a talk on J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Ed James, a medieval scholar from Britain.
  • Short Story Reading by Professor Cathy Day
    On April 17 at 7:30pm in the Business Building Lounge Cathy Day read a story from her forthcoming book of short stories, The Circus in Winter, recently accepted at Harcourt Press. She also read Wallace Porter Sees the Elephant, which was selected as one of the 100 Distinguished short stories of 2002, in the 2002 edition of Best American Short Stories. Refreshments were served.
  • Royal Shakespeare Company’s As You Like It Trip
    On Saturday April 26, STD sponsored an all day bus trip to the Kennedy Center to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of As You Like It.   STD arrived in time for a backstage tour and lunch before the 2:30 matinee.

Fall 2002

Events

  • Fundraiser at Chevy’s
    Sigma Tau Delta held a fundraiser at Chevy’s on Route 1 on Tuesday, September 10.  20% of the bill for all customers who mentioned STD was donated to our organization.  This event was open to the general public.
  • Dodge Poetry Festival
    The Creative Writing committee of Sigma Tau Delta encouraged interested TCNJ students to attend the Dodge Poetry Festival on Sunday, September 22.   Chris Ludwig transported interested TCNJ students to the event.  This event was open to the entire TCNJ community.
  • “Web Workshop for Wordsmiths” by Criag Kapp
    Sigma Tau Delta sponsored a “Web Workshop for Wordsmiths” on Wednesday, October 30 from 1-3 pm in Bliss 31.  Craig Kapp (the college technology guru) talked about web design and led a hands-on introduction to creating a web page.  This workshop was open only to English faculty and students and was geared to the web skills of us literary types.  Refreshments were served.  Registration was held online.

Events

  • Lecture by Professor Robert Fagles of Princeton University
    In conjunction with Classical Studies, the School of Culture and Society, the Department of English, and the General Education Program at TCNJ, Sigma Tau Delta sponsored a lecture by Professor Robert Fagles of Princeton University on Tuesday, March 26, at 4:00 p.m. in the Music Building Concert Hall.  Professor Fagles is a world renowned translator of classical texts, and read from The Odyssey, discussed the epic, and entertained questions.
  • Graduate School in English Information Session by Dr. Felicia Steele

  • Sigma Tau Delta helped sponsor the February 20, 2002 appearance on campus of author and photographer Carla Williams who was meeting and greeting members of the TCNJ community as part of the celebration of Black History month on the afternoon of Wednesday the 20th.
  • Sigma Tau Delta members Elizabeth Livingston and Jessica Roth and TCNJ senior Melissa Evans and TCNJ grads Tom O’Connor and Damian Bariexca appeared in Lady Windermere’s Fan through February 17 in the Shakespeare ’70 theater in Kendall.

  • Celebration of Student Achievement
    Sigma Tau Delta volunteers helped out at The Celebration of Student Achievement held here on campus on May 1, 2002.
  • TCNJ Writer’s Conference
    Sigma Tau Delta students staffed the TCNJ Writer’s Conference on April 18, 2002.
  • Somewhere Between the Turnpike and the Parkway: The Allenwood Chronicles, an anthology of TCNJ student fiction
    Sigma Tau Delta helped with production costs for the publication of Somewhere Between the Turnpike and the Parkway: The Allenwood Chronicles, an anthology of TCNJ student fiction.  Ask Professor Cathy Day for details.

    The fourth in our series of Faculty Research Talks was held!  On Monday, April 8 at 8:00 p.m., Dr. Jo Carney presented “Renaissance Chics Go to Hollywood,” a discussion of early modern women and their portrayal in recent movies.”
  • “Passing” by Dr. Juda Bennett
    Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bliss Hall main lounge, Dr. Juda Bennett spoke on “Passing.”  Free and open to the public.  Refreshments were served.
